The Swiss Data Cube: A Platform as a Service (PaaS) for Environmental Monitoring
Presenter
DescriptionThe Swiss Data Cube is the second operational Data Cube in the World after Australia. It aims at unleashing the information power of Big Earth Data for monitoring the environment, providing Analysis Ready Data over all Switzerland since 1984 and updated daily. Based on an innovative analytical cloud-computing platform for accessing, visualization and analysis of optical and radar imagery, the SDC minimizes the time and knowledge required for analyses and offers consistent calibrated and spatially aligned satellite observations. It opens up a wide range of applications for environmental monitoring and reporting, facilitating new research to enhance knowledge. Currently, we are looking for ways to improve the efficiency of the SDC by making use of the HPC cluster that we have at the University of Geneva, as well as other Cloud platforms if available. The presentation will focus on the computational and technical challenges that we have encountered during the process of parallelizing and porting the SDC on the Baobab HPC cluster. Different options were analyzed and compared to find the most suitable and flexible solution to execute analysis on the SDC as efficient as possible, considering not only the scale of the analysis but also the concurrency of the users.
