SUMMARY:The Quasi-Biennial Oscillation – from the km-Scale of Deep Convect
ion to a Global Scale Wind Oscillation in the Stratosphere
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nThe Quasi-Biennial Oscillation – from the km-
Scale of Deep Convection to a Global Scale Wind Oscillation in the Stratos
phere\n\nGiorgetta\n\nThe quasi-biennial oscillation is observed in the zo
nal wind in the equatorial stratosphere where alternatively westerly and e
asterly winds are generated in the upper stratosphere, then propagate down
wards until the tropopause is reached. A full cycle lasts a bit more than
2 years. These global scale jets are driven by waves triggered by tropical
cloud systems. The challenge we have is to understand how this phenomenon
will change in a warmer climate. To address this question the QUBICC proj
ect aims in a first step at global km-scale resolved simulations using the
ICON model. In this experiment we try for a first time to simulate the dr
iving mechanism explicitly. Owing to the size of the problem the model was
ported to GPU for application on "Piz Daint".\n\nDomain: CS and Math, Cli
