SUMMARY:Orchestration of Containers on the Heterogeneous Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nOrchestration of Containers on the Heterogene
 ous Infrastructure\n\nRadolović, Vladušič\n\nSODALITE, an H2020
project, simplifies application deployment complexity while retaining or i
mproving application performance on targeted HPC heterogeneous and cloud s
ystems. The complexity of heterogeneous application deployment is reduced
through abstraction of application’s component relationships, polici
es and performance. The application is modelled and then deployed using ap
propriate container technologies, matching the targeted heterogeneous HPC
and cloud-based platforms. The challenges modern applications face ar
e usually complex deployment and management, as they are heterogeneous and
running in diverse multilayered, heterogeneous infrastructures. Applicati
ons have to satisfy a set of non-functional requirements, targeting optimi
zation from various aspects (application performance, execution cost, the
infrastructure utility, etc). Looking at the problem from this perspective
, we can also understand the challenges in knowledge and expertise of the
personnel operating the application and infrastructure. The solution provi
des the application and infrastructure operators, with a guidance and enca
psulation system, radically simplifying their task. Recently, the con
tainer technologies have been improved to the point where they can be used
as application pods on practically any targeted infrastructure. SODALITE
thus uses appropriate containers to simplify the application deployment fo
r Ops through usage of automated container orchestration. Once the system
is running, SODALITE is using Machine Learning and Control-theory approach
es to satisfy the non-functional requirements with heavy use of policies a
nd Infrastructure as Code (IaC) approach through orchestration. The SODALIT
E approach will lower the bar on the learning curve for Ops enabling them
to concentrate on domain problems, which will result in lower overall cost
s of development and application lifecycle management.\n\nDomain: CS and M
