SUMMARY:An Automated Workflow for Regional and Reservoir Scale Adjoint Tom
 ography Using Salvus
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nAn Automated Workflow for Regional and Reserv
oir Scale Adjoint Tomography Using Salvus\n\nMorency, Rodgers, Chiang, Mat
zel, Simmons...\n\nWe use the public dataset of a dense seismic array depl
oyed for active source tomography at the Brady Hot Springs geothermal site
in Nevada collected for shallow geothermal reservoir monitoring. This dat
aset involves vibroseis sources at 196 locations recorded by 238 three-com
ponents receivers. We assess two prior velocity models, based on travel ti
me inversion and on interferometry, for full waveform inversion to further
refine the Earth model and identify shallow fluid circulation. We have al
so developed a 3D seismic model of the Western US based on available publi
c broadband waveforms from moderately large earthquakes (MW 5-6.5) and att
empt to fit waveforms with periods down to 5-10 seconds. The goal is to sh
ow how refined 3D Earth models can improve source characterization of even
ts of smaller magnitude. For both these applications, we leverage the use
of Salvus, an end-to-end seismic imaging solution, reling on the spectral
element method to compute forward and adjoint simulations. It includes int
egrated workflow management that handles waveform and metadata, launches s
imulations, computes waveform misfits and adjoint sources, and iterates fo
r model updates by nonlinear optimization. This work was performed under t
he auspices of the U.S. Department of Energy by LawrenceLivermore National
Laboratory under Contract DE-AC52-07NA27344.\n\nDomain: CS and Math, Phys
