SUMMARY:Continuum Kinetic Simulations of Tokamak Edge Plasmas with COGENT
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nContinuum Kinetic Simulations of Tokamak Edge
Plasmas with COGENT\n\nRicketson, Ghosh, Dorr, Dorf, Hittinger\n\nWe pres
ent progress on the COGENT code, designed to simulate kinetic edge plasmas
in tokamaks in complex geometries spanning both sides of the magnetic sep
aratrix.  The high-order finite volume methods for the gyrokinetic sy
stem and mapped multiblock geometries intrinsic to the code will be review
ed.  The recent extension of the code to 5D (3D+2V), using a field-al
igned grid to exploit the system’s extreme anisotropy, will be highl
ighted.  This capability enables first-of-a-kind continuum simulation
s of the ion temperature gradient (ITG) instability in the single-null geo
metry.  The code’s multiphysics preconditioning framework will
be presented, along with examples of the implicit time-stepping of stiff t
erms in the gyrokinetic Vlasov-Poisson system, including collisions and pa
rallel advection.  We also report on progress incorporating newly dev
eloped, high-order, sparse grid methods into the code to combat the proble
m’s high dimensionality.\n\nDomain: CS and Math, Physics
