SUMMARY:P33 - PSIP Toolkit: A Lightweight Process for Incremental Software
  Process Improvement
DESCRIPTION:Poster\n\nP33 - PSIP Toolkit: A Lightweight Process for Increm
ental Software Process Improvement\n\nRaybourn, Gonsiorowski, Milewicz, Ro
gers, Sims...\n\nMany scientific software development teams experience cha
llenges in their development practices.  They may or may not be recog
nized as “pain points”, but nevertheless can adversely im
pact the team’s development or scientific productivity, sustainabili
ty of their software, reliability of their scientific results, etc.
Even when such challenges are recognized, teams may not see a way to impro
ve the situation, or may consider potential solutions to be too expensive
or onerous. We present Productivity and Sustainability Improvement Plannin
g (PSIP), a lightweight process and toolkit that can help teams improve th
eir software development practices systematically. Our PSIP toolkit f
eatures methods to query a team’s project, and a guided self-assessm
ent that enables the examination of software development, planning, perfor
mance, reliability, and collaboration practices. PSIP is then implemented
via identifying incremental improvements and executing plans based on Prog
ress Tracking Cards (PTCs). The approach is iterative. Once sufficien
t progress has been made on a PSIP goal, a new challenge can be identified
and a plan developed and executed to address it. Over a series of PSIP ac
tivities, the benefits accumulate, and the trajectory of development conti
nues to improve. We will provide examples of several PSIP experiences, and
describe the toolkit used by teams.
